The Restore Vaginal Health Program involves several key components that contribute to overall well-being. These components are focused on maintaining hygiene, balance, and the health of the vaginal microbiome.
Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) is a common vaginal condition caused by an imbalance in the natural bacteria found in the vagina. The vagina typically contains a mix of "good" bacteria (like Lactobacillus) and "bad" bacteria, but when the balance is disrupted, the harmful bacteria can overgrow, leading to BV.
Overgrowth of harmful bacteria: The primary cause is an overgrowth of anaerobic bacteria, such as Gardnerella vaginalis, which normally exist in small numbers.
Disruptions to vaginal pH: The vagina is naturally acidic, which helps maintain a healthy bacterial balance. Anything that alters this pH balance, such as unprotected sex, douching, or the use of certain hygiene products, can increase the risk of BV.
Sexual activity: Although not considered a sexually transmitted infection (STI), BV is more common in sexually active women. New or multiple sexual partners can increase the risk.
Antibiotic use: Antibiotics can disrupt the natural balance of bacteria in the vagina, making it more prone to infections like BV.
Hormonal changes: Pregnancy, menopause, and other hormonal fluctuations can also impact the vaginal microbiome and contribute to BV.
When patients visit their doctor with symptoms. Some women with BV may not experience any symptoms, while others may have:
Unusual vaginal discharge: This may be thin, grayish-white, or yellow in color. It might also have a fishy odor, especially after sex.
Vaginal odor: The characteristic odor of BV is often described as a "fishy" smell, which is caused by the overgrowth of bacteria.
Itching or irritation: Some women may experience mild itching or discomfort around the vaginal area.
Burning sensation: A burning feeling during urination or after sex is also a common symptom.
If your provider suspects you have an infection, they will swab the vaginal cavity and send to a lab to determine which organisms have caused the infection. If an infection is present, it may be protected by biofilm making it more difficult to treat. Bacterial Vaginosis can be treated with antibiotics either orally or topically, with topical treatments preferred with recurrent infection or a biofilm is suspected.
Our program is designed to educate our patients and families on good hygiene. If an infection is identified, we partner with your provider to offer customized topical antibiotic prescriptions compounded in an ant-biofilm base to treat the identified infection. We also support repopulation of the vaginal flora with healthy bacteria to prevent recurrent infection.
Generally, a good vaginal hygiene program consists of:
Balanced Diet
Hydration: Adequate water intake helps maintain the body’s natural balance, including the vaginal area.
Probiotics: Foods rich in probiotics, like yogurt, kefir, and fermented foods, support the vaginal microbiome by promoting healthy bacteria like Lactobacillus.
Nutrient-Rich Foods: A diet rich in vitamins (especially vitamin C, vitamin E, and vitamin D) and minerals (like zinc and magnesium) supports immune function and overall vaginal health.
Avoiding Excess Sugar: High sugar intake can disrupt the balance of vaginal flora, potentially leading to infections like yeast.
Proper Hygiene
Gentle Cleansing: Use a mild, fragrance-free soap to wash the vaginal area. The vagina is self-cleaning, and harsh products or excessive washing can disrupt the natural pH.
Avoid Douching: Douching can upset the natural balance of bacteria in the vagina, increasing the risk of infections.
Drying: After showering or swimming, make sure to dry the vaginal area thoroughly to prevent bacterial growth.
Regular Physical Activity
Exercise supports circulation, which is important for vaginal health. Regular physical activity can reduce stress and improve overall body function, including immune system strength.
Safe Sexual Practices
Use Protection: Condoms help reduce the risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), which can affect vaginal health.
Post-Sexual Hygiene: Urinate after intercourse to help flush out any potential bacteria. It’s also helpful to shower after sex.
Lubrication: Using water-based or oil-based lubricants can prevent irritation and dryness during sex.
Regular Medical Checkups
Gynecological Exams: Regular visits to a gynecologist for check-ups are crucial for detecting any underlying issues, including infections or abnormal conditions like fibroids.
Pap Smears: These screenings help detect abnormal cell changes in the cervix that could lead to cancer.
STI Screenings: Regular testing for sexually transmitted infections helps maintain vaginal and reproductive health.
Understanding and Managing Menstrual Health
Use of Safe Menstrual Products: Choosing non-toxic, breathable menstrual products like organic cotton tampons, menstrual cups, or cloth pads can reduce irritation and prevent infections.
Managing Menstrual Irregularities: Addressing conditions like heavy periods, painful menstruation, or irregular cycles with professional guidance helps maintain overall vaginal health.
Stress Management
Chronic stress can impact hormone levels and immune function, which may affect vaginal health. Incorporating stress-relieving activities like meditation, yoga, and deep breathing exercises can help support overall health.
Knowledge of Vaginal Infections and Conditions
Yeast Infections: Understanding symptoms and how to treat or prevent them (e.g., using antifungal treatments and probiotics).
Bacterial Vaginosis: Recognizing symptoms such as unusual discharge and odor and seeking treatment early.
Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): Knowing the signs of a UTI, like painful urination, and seeking prompt treatment can help avoid complications.
Vulvodynia or Vaginal Dryness: Identifying and managing chronic pain or dryness with appropriate medical interventions.
Rest and Sleep
Quality sleep is essential for the body’s healing and immune function. Ensuring adequate rest helps regulate hormone levels and supports vaginal health.
Avoiding Harmful Products
Fragrance-Free Products: Avoid using vaginal sprays, scented tampons, and douches, which can irritate sensitive skin.
Avoid Tight Clothing: Wearing tight-fitting clothes or synthetic underwear that doesn’t breathe can increase moisture, contributing to infections.
Supportive Supplements
Probiotics: Oral supplements may help maintain a healthy vaginal flora, especially after antibiotic treatment.
Vitamins and Minerals: Some may benefit from supplements like vitamin D, vitamin C, or zinc for overall immune support, but these should be used based on individual needs.
The Restore Vaginal Health program offers a structured method to manage your infection and restore a healthy vaginal biome by:
Removing the biofilm protecting the bacteria
Treating the underlying nail infection with a Targeted Rx
Repopulating the vaginal biome with supplements
By focusing on these areas, individuals can establish a program that helps maintain healthy vaginal function, prevent infections, and address any concerns promptly. Regular consultation with a healthcare provider is also an important aspect of maintaining optimal vaginal health.
