Why Target Biofilms?

Targeting biofilms is crucial for effective infection management due to their role in antibiotic resistance and persistent infections. Strategies to combat biofilms include breaking down the extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) matrix to enhance antibiotic effectiveness, inhibiting their initial formation, and utilizing a TargetedRx designed to eliminate biofilm-associated bacteria. Addressing biofilms directly not only improves patient outcomes but also helps curb the spread of antibiotic-resistant infections.

- Sarah Simmers, PharmD

Customicro's PharmD i3 Service prioritizes topical interventions to support biofilm management.  Anti-biofilm strategies combat biofilm resilience that arises from multiple factors:

  • Physical Barrier: The EPS matrix of biofilms impedes the penetration of antimicrobial agents, reducing their efficacy.

  • Altered Microenvironment: Within biofilms, gradients of nutrients and oxygen create zones where bacteria can enter a dormant state, making them less susceptible to antibiotics that target actively dividing cells.

  • Genetic Exchange: Close proximity of bacterial cells facilitates the transfer of genes, including those conferring antibiotic resistance.

Given these challenges, the topical targeting of biofilms is essential for effective infection control.

Identification

Partner laboratories conduct molecular diagnostics of clinical samples to precisely detect the correct pathogen(s), identify antibiotic drug resistance and offer rapid diagnostic reporting of microbiological results.

Interpretation

Our pharmacists are a reliable source of healthcare information, offering clinical interpretations of molecular diagnostics to support medication therapy management, screen for potential drug interactions and allergies, and educate patients on the proper use of antibiotics and expected side effects.

Intervention

Upon request from the provider, our pharmacists offer individualized recommendations for topical anti-biofilm TargetedRx Therapy. The recommendations are based on pathogenic bioburden and resistance genes identified through molecular diagnostics, as part of our comprehensive programs.

Customicro Clinical Services

Customicro Clinical Services offers our pharmD i3 Service as an intervention to address the patient's underlying infection, often present in a biofilm, and the microenvironment needing support to remove it. Our clinical services are focused on the education of our patients and providers of programs available to offer strategies to clear the difficult to treat or recurrent infection.

Service Scope: The scope is narrow and focused to support a particular infection as requested by the provider and is typically offered on a one-time or ongoing basis until the infection is cleared. We offer our service to patients at home, as part of a clinic service, or permanent residents of nursing homes or care facilities.

Customicro Clinical Programs

Customicro offers personalized clinical programs administered by Customedico Pharmacy + Wellness. Customicro Clinical Programs offer a comprehensive, on-going initiative to remove and prevent biofilms, treat an infection with a topical TargetedRx, and restore any imbalance to the microenvironment.

Program Scope: The scope is broader including patient and provider education, supplements, and prescription medications to both prevent and offer treatment strategies necessary for ongoing education and therapy management. We offer our programs to patients at home, as part of a clinic service, or permanent residents of nursing homes or care facilities located in states where our partner pharmacies are licensed.

Biofilm management to clear an infection is the most common and preventable challenge in wound healing. The BioFACTor Wound Hygiene Program offers a systematic approach to wound chronicity management.

The CustomGut 5R Reset Program supports your journey to gut health.

The Relief Sinus program offers compounded prescription options for nasal infection, biotoxin, inflammation, or allergy symptom management using the RESQRINSE® nasal rinse system to deliver medications into the sinus cavity or the Rhino Clear Sprint atomizer for nebulization delivery of particles of medications in small volumes directly to the sinus tissues.

The Restore Vaginal Health Program involves several key components that contribute to overall well-being. These components are focused on maintaining hygiene, balance, and the health of the vaginal microbiome.

Manage biofilm-based nail infections in two simple steps! Spray and massage compounded prescription cleansing formula to penetrate and break down debris to prep for treatment step. After cleansing, apply TargetedRx compounded prescription suspension to nail and surrounding nailbed to treat pathogens identified in the underlying nail infection.

Designed for facility patients or those requiring care at home, the anti-biofilm, one-step compounded TargetedRx gel applied to thickened, yellow nails three-times per week by clinician or caregiver will treat pathogens identified in the underlying nail infection.
